Goals: Open blocked sinus openings using FDA-cleared balloon devices for improved drainage/function with minimal bleeding/discomfort. 

Risks: Bleeding/scarring/infection; rare risks include CSF leaks or optic injury. Results are not guaranteed; formal sinus surgery may be necessary if ineffective. 

Typical Length: 30 minutes (in-office) 

Benefits: Minimally invasive, FDA-cleared procedure, quick recovery, minimal bleeding, and most patients return to normal activities often within 1-2 days. 

Alternatives: Medications like antibiotics or nasal steroids, but about 20% of patients don’t respond well to them. 

Pre-Op Instructions: 

• Stop blood thinners and NSAIDs (like ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E) 1 week prior. 

• Discuss medications (pain or anxiety pills) with Dr. Yerukhim if desired—arrange for a driver if you take them. 

Day of Procedure:

• Takes about 20–30 minutes to numb the nose using sprays, gel, and injections 

• A balloon catheter is guided into the sinuses, inflated briefly, then removed. 

• Most patients report no pain or only mild pressure or “crackling” sounds. 

Post-Op Instructions:

• No packing is needed. 

• Use a drip pad for light bleeding/drainage, usually resolves in 24 hours. 

• Throat numbness may occur from anesthesia; avoid food/drink until swallowing is normal. 

• Voice changes may occur temporarily but will resolve. 

Recovery 

• Typically painless; may have mild discomfort or headaches treatable with Tylenol. 

• Light bloody drainage for 1–2 days is normal.
