Septal Perforation Repair

Goals: Repair symptomatic septal perforations causing nasal obstruction, bleeding, noisy breathing/whistling, crusting, or collapse.

Risks: Bleeding, infection, scarring at donor sites (if tissue grafts are used), failure of repair leading to persistent symptoms.

Alternatives: Septal Button placement - a plastic piece placed to cover the perforation. Not suitable for very large perforations. Typically needs to be cleaned/replaced every year. Can sometimes be done in the office with just numbing medicines.

Typical Length: 1.5 – 3 hrs, potentially longer for more challenging cases.

Postoperative Care:

  • Splints inside the nose remain for three weeks instead of one week.

  • Recovery is similar to septoplasty but requires longer splint placement.
